Kaali Khuhi tackles the issue of female infanticide in India
Kaali Khuhi is the story of Shivangi, a 10-year-old girl, who must save her family’s village from the restless ghosts of the village’s horrific past. The trailer opens with the voice over of a girl who asks, “Tujhe bhoot ki kahaniyan pasand hai?” (Do you like ghost stories?), as we are shown glimpses of a funeral and a puja through the 30 seconds of the teaser. Sinistrous music in the background, complete with hair-raising moments of people looking scared compels the viewer to think, “What is the story?”
The streaming giant is going to release the horror film as a Halloween treat for its audience. The film is the directorial project of Terrie Samundra, and produced by Anku Pande and Ramon Chibb. The movie has Shabana Azmi, Sanjeeda Shaikh, Satyadeep Mishra and Riva Arora as the protagonists.
Punjab, the northern state of India is infamous for social crimes prevalent like drug addiction, child marriage, female infanticide and domestic violence. The setting of the film symbolizes the intensity of such issues, which are widespread, inherent and sadly normalized in India through ages. Trying to question the evil practices, Kaali Khuhi’s director Terrie Samundra has penned the screenplay along with David Walter Lech, to interrogate the same. Rupinder Inderjit has been credited as dialogue writer.
The film will stream on Netflix on 30th October
‘Kaali Khuhi’, which translates to a Black Well is about the girl Shivangi, who sees repeated visions of a young girl. The screenplay of the Netflix original is quite powerful and chilling, while the creepy music makes it spookier to watch.
The teaser description by Netflix India ends with a note of ambiguity and a feeling of uneasiness. “Will she be successful in saving what’s most dear to her?” leaves the viewer with a mind wanting more.
Slated to release on October 30, watch this film to stream on Netflix.
